| Concept | Vaping summary |
| Description | Summary or persistent information about an individual’s use of devices that aerosolise nicotine or other substances for inhalation. |
| Use | Use to record summary information about the individual's use of devices that aerosolise nicotine or other substances for inhalation. This archetype is to be used to record information about both current and previous vaping behaviour. Use to incorporate the narrative descriptions of vaping within existing or legacy clinical systems, using the 'Overall description' data element. The history of waxing and waning of use for each type of substance or e-liquid over time can be captured using the repeatable 'Per episode' cluster. Triggers for closing one episode and commencing a new one will largely reflect local data collection preferences, including if the individual:
|
| Misuse | Not to be used to record summary-based information about tobacco smoking, such as the pattern of smoking habits - use the EVALUATION.tobacco_smoking_summary archetype for this purpose. Not to be used to record summary-based information about substance use - use the EVALUATION.substance_use_summary for this purpose. Not to be used to record summary-based information about smokeless tobacco use - for example: snus; snuff; chewing tobacco; dip; and gutka. Use the archetype EVALUATION.smokeless_tobacco_summary archetype for this purpose. Not to be used to record event-or period-based information about tobacco smoking, such as actual daily use or the average use over a specified period of time - use the OBSERVATION.tobacco_smoking archetype. Not to be used to record evidence of nicotine dependency. Use the OBSERVATION.fagerstrom for this purpose. Not to be used to record details about unintended exposure to tobacco smoke or passive smoking. Use the archetype EVALUATION.exposure for this purpose. Not to be used for recording any other administration of nicotine, such as nicotine patches or nicotine chewing gum. The need for a specific archetype for this purpose is acknowledged but had not yet been developed at the time of the publication of this archetype. |
| Purpose | To record summary information about the individual's pattern of vaping. |

| Overall status | Overall status: Statement about an individual’s current use of vaping devices. Coding with a terminology is recommended. Free text entry should only be permitted if no appropriate coded value is available.
|
| Overall description | Overall description: Narrative description about the individual’s overall vaping pattern and history. Use this data element to record a narrative description of the vaping habits for this individual or to incorporate unstructured vaping information from existing or legacy clinical systems. |
| Regular vaping commenced | Regular vaping commenced: The date or partial date when the individual first started frequent or regular, but usually non-daily, vaping of any substance. Can be a partial date, for example, only a year. For example, this date could represent when the individual commenced vaping every Friday night or at parties. |
| Daily vaping commenced | Daily vaping commenced: The date or partial date when the individual first started daily vaping of any substance. Can be a partial date, for example, only a year. |
| Per substance | Per substance: Details about vaping activity for a specified type of substance or e-liquid. |
| Substance name | Substance name: The name of the substance or e-liquid vaped by the individual. |
| Status | Status: Statement about current vaping behaviour for the specified substance or e-liquid.
|
| Description | Description: Narrative summary about vaping behaviour for the specified substance or e-liquid. |
| Per episode | Per episode: Details about a discrete period of vaping activity for the specified substance or e-liquid. |
| Episode label | Episode label: Identification of an episode of vaping activity - either as a number in a sequence and/or a named event. For example: '2' as the second episode within a sequence of episodes; or 'Pregnancy with twins' if describing the vaping activity during a health event such as during a specific pregnancy. Choice of:
|
| Episode start date | Episode start date: Date when this episode commenced. Can be a partial date, for example, only a year. |
| Episode end date | Episode end date: Date when this episode ceased. Can be a partial date, for example, only a year. This data field will be empty if the episode is current and ongoing. |
| Pattern | Pattern: The typical pattern of vaping for the specified substance or e-liquid. Choice of:
|
| ???Typical use (units) | ???Typical use (units): Estimate of number of units of the specified type of substance or e-liquid consumed. This data element is redundant if a value is recorded for 'Typical use(mass)'. Units:
|
| Number of quit attempts | Number of quit attempts: Total number of times the individual has attempted to stop vaping the specified substance or e-liquid within this episode. min: >=0 |
| Episode details | Episode details: Additional structured details about the specified episode of vaping. Include: openEHR-EHR-CLUSTER.cessation_ |
| Episode comment | Episode comment: Additional narrative about vaping during the specified episode, not captured in other fields. |
| Quit date | Quit date: Date when the individual last vaped the specified substance or e-liquid. Can be a partial date, for example, only a year. Definitions for a 'Quit date' vary enormously and can be defined using the 'Quit data definition' data element in the Protocol section of this archetype. This date will be identical to the 'Episode end date' for the most recent episode. This date could be used by decision support guidance to determine if the individual is at risk of relapse, for example in the first 12 months since quitting. |
| Substance details | Substance details: Additional structured details about the specified type of substance or e-liquid vaped. Include: All not explicitly excluded archetypes |
| Comment | Comment: Additional narrative about vaping of the specified substance or e-liquid, not captured in other fields. |
| Additional details | Additional details: Additional structured details about the overall vaping behaviour. |
| Overall quit date | Overall quit date: The date when the individual last ceased vaping of any substance or e-liquid. Can be a partial date, for example, only a year. This date could be used by decision support guidance to determine if the individual is at risk of relapse, for example in the first 12 months since quitting. |
| Overall comment | Overall comment: Additional narrative about all vaping that has not been captured in other fields. For example: stopped vaping or reduced amount on becoming pregnant. |
| protocol | |
| Extension | Extension: Additional information required to capture local content or to align with other reference models/formalisms. For example: local information requirements or additional metadata to align with FHIR or CIMI equivalents. Include: All not explicitly excluded archetypes |
| Quit date definition | Quit date definition: The applied definition for the 'Quit date' data elements used in this archetype. |
| Quit attempt definition | Quit attempt definition: The applied definition for a Quit attempt used to determine value for the 'Number of quit attempts' data element used in this archetype. For example: 'stopped vaping for one day or longer with the intention of quitting'. |
| Current vpaer definition | Current vpaer definition: The applied definition for the 'Current vaper' value in each of the 'Status' data elements used in this archetype. Definition may need to be specified per type. Current vaper definitions vary in different jurisdictions. |
