ConceptPaO2/FiO2 ratio
DescriptionRatio between the partial pressure of oxygen in blood (PaO2) and the fraction of oxygen in the inhaled air (FiO2).
UseUse to record the ratio between the partial pressure of oxygen in blood (PaO2), and the fraction of oxygen in the inspired air (FiO2). Allowed units for PaO2 when calculating the ratio is mmHg (millimeters of mercury) or kPa (kiloPascal), as both units are in use. The value of PaO2 will be usually be recorded elsewhere in the health record as part of an arterial blood gas test result (OBSERVATION.laboratory_test_result). The value of FiO2 will usually be recorded elsewhere in the health record using the 'FiO2' data element (at0052) in the CLUSTER.inspired_oxygen. This ratio may be used within other scores, such as SMART-COP risk score.
PurposeUse to record the ratio between the partial pressure of oxygen in blood (PaO2) and the fraction of oxygen in the inspired air (FiO2), used to assess lung function in patients, particularly those on ventilators.
